The YAK
The yak, Bos grunniens, is a wild ox in the cattle family, Bovidae, found in the mountains of Tibet and adjacent areas.
Agile, sure climbers and good swimmers, yaks roam icy mountainsides and valleys, grazing on coarse grasses. A wild bull may be
2.4 to 2.7 m (8 to 9 ft) long, stand 1.8 m (6 ft) tall at its shoulder hump, and weigh approximately 545 kg (1,200 lb). Yaks have long hair that
hangs nearly to the ground like a fringe.
Wild yaks are blackish brown, but smaller domesticated forms may be red or brown mottled with white. All males have large horns.
Domesticated yaks are used for transportation, as pack animals, and as sources of milk, meat, leather, and cloth.
